Goodreads

This was my first independent UX project, where I took on the challenge of redesigning Goodreadsā€”a platform I use often but find outdated and unintuitive. Goodreads is a staple for readers, but its UI is outdated, customization options are limited, and user engagement could be improved. My goal was to modernize the platform while keeping its core functionality intact and enhancing personalization.

Whatā€™s The Problem?

How might I improve Goodreads in a way that retains its core features while making it feel more modern, intuitive, and personalized?

My Solution

Take a sneak peek at my Figma file, or read on for my design process.

Research

I already knew what issues I had with the Goodreads app, but I am not designing for only myself- I am not the user. So I set out and interviewed 20 people.

I went to bookstores and libraries, facetimed friends and family, contacted BookTokers, scoured the internet and even looked through the reviews on the App Store. I wanted to be as well informed about features people loved, hated, and wished for.

I created an affinity cluster of the results.

Brainstorming

After understanding usersā€™ pain points and satisfaction, I began coming up with ideas to address the most pressing issues while keeping true to what made people happy.
